Narrative
Konel Banner and Frank Weston, creators of Morningside’s Emergency Fuel, discussed their fire product. Konel explained that all of his life, the importance of storing food and fuel were stressed to him and he always wondered just how fuel could be stored safely over a long period of time. He recalled how two life events spurred him on to develop this Emergency Fuel product. One was the devastation that struck his sister’s family when their lives were turned upside down in the Teton Dam Flood of 1976. During that time, in all her efforts to gather items the family would need, she forgot diapers and formula for her young baby. She later commented to her brother that a mind does not think straight when in the midst of a disaster which is why it’s best to have a survival pack or plan prepared and ready.
The second event that seared into his mind the necessity of producing a fuel source was the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. In speaking with authorities who survived the storm, he was told that many people died or injured themselves when they began taking the moldings off of houses and buildings to use to boil water. Sadly, negative reactions came from the fumes produced when the paints and chemicals on these moldings were heated and released into the air.
Konel’s story led Pastor Jim to say one of the worst things you can do is use contaminated water to hydrate or cook food. He urged the audience to boil or filter their water in cases where a disaster has made fresh water unavailable.
Konel, an avid outdoorsman, went on to describe how he encountered an old mountain man one day, who had produced fire with rocks. Konel wanted to learn the secret to this and after some experimentation, time, and assistance from Frank, they discovered that volcanic rock, when heated to 3000 degrees, pop like popcorn and become light and absorbent.
Frank added that these lava rocks have a black color when first mined out of the earth but, once heated, they take on the lighter, white colored appearance found in the Morningside Emergency Fuel product. He added that because the rocks are volcanic, they can burn on ice or snow and even float and burn on water.
Pastor Jim noted the miraculous way the men met and said he knew when he saw the product that it was an “answer to his puzzle.” He called the Emergency Fuel product an amazing development and the greatest product of its kind that he’s ever seen. It stands apart from oils or other fuels, he said, because even small children can safely carry packets in their backpacks. He declared the product is one that will help people better prepare for the last days.
Sounding like a preacher himself, Konel recalled words from his father who said, “If you are prepared, you shall not fear.” He reminded that fear and faith cannot occupy the same space and said the solution to the problems that lay ahead, will involve people taking action rather than sitting around waiting for miracles.
