Canada’s Largest City Flooded

Heavy rain deluged Toronto, Canada Monday dumping an average month’s worth of rain on the city in one day. At the Pearson International Airport, the rainfall topped the previous one-day record from 1954’s Hurricane Hazel.

Officials say that over 3.5 inches of rain fell Monday. The rain caused flooding throughout the city including major roads and subway stations causing major traffic problems. Hundreds of commuter train passengers were stranded and had to be rescued by police boats. Continue reading

Thousands Still Missing From India Flooding

The chief minister of Uttarakhand state in India says near 3,000 people are still missing after flash flooding and landsides devastated the region.

Vijay Bahuguna said the exact number of deaths will likely never be known but that over 800 people are confirmed dead in the state. Over 100,000 people have been evacuated from the area and reports say that hundreds of people are still trapped in remote regions of the state. Continue reading

Heavy Rains Bring Flooding To Upper Midwest

Rivers from North Dakota to St. Louis are being issued flood warnings after a series of heavy thunderstorms dumped significant rainfall across the upper Midwest Wednesday.

The National Weather Service said more than 5 inches of rain fell in many areas and it was likely to have more rain through the night Wednesday into Thursday. However, local officials in parts of North Dakota reported 8 inches of rain and Iowa officials reported up to 7 inches. Continue reading

Canada Evacuates Thousands Ahead of Flooding

Flood waters have been inundating parts of southern Alberta, Canada and cities along the South Saskatchewan River are preparing for more.

Over 10,000 residents of Medicine Hat have been evacuated as officials expect the river to crest at record levels and essentially split the town. The Trans-Canada Highway bridge which joins the northern and southern parts of the city is expected to be underwater Sunday night. Continue reading

India Flooding Called “Himalayan Tsunami”

The Indian government has launched a massive rescue operation to save survivors in Uttarakhand state where at least 150 are now confirmed dead.

State Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna called the flooding a “Himalayan tsunami”. Officials estimated the number of dead could be well over 1,000 but it will be impossible to get a total until after they can survey the entire region. Continue reading

India Flooding Death Toll Now 138

Military troops are now leading rescue operations in the flood-torn northern states in India including the use of helicopters to rescue stranded civilians.

Officials have confirmed the deaths of 138 people with hundreds more still missing.

In addition to the flooding, landslides are now a serious threat to the region. In Nepal, a landslide killed 22 and has 18 people missing. Continue reading

India Flooding Death Toll Jumps To 70

India officials have listed the latest confirmed deaths from widespread flooding in the northern part of the nation at 70. Hundreds are still missing after heavy rains have washed buildings into the rivers along with cars and heavy equipment.

In addition to thousands being forced to leave their homes, officials say at least 75,000 people on a religious pilgrimage are trapped in the region because flooding has cut off all roads to the southern part of the country. Continue reading
