Uruguay has become the second country in Latin America to legalize abortion. The other nation is communist Cuba.
The measure is causing major divisions within the predominantly Roman Catholic country. The Uruguayan Senate approved the bill 17-14 to allow abortion within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Uruguay’s lower house of Congress has given approval to a bill that would allow abortion in the first three months of pregnancy. The Uruguayan Senate approved a similar measure last December and will soon vote on the new bill. President Jose Mujica said he will approve the law if passed.
