Colorado Girl Gets Bubonic Plague While Camping

Luke 21:11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.

After reports this Summer of three people contracting the potentially deadly hantavirus while camping in Colorado, now a seven-year-old girl has been infected with bubonic plague after a Colorado camping trip.

Sierra Jane Downing thought she had the flu until her parents discovered she had a 107-degree fever after suffering a seizure at home. Doctors were unable at first to discover the cause before testing for the extremely rare bubonic plague. This is the first confirmed case in Colorado in 2006.

Federal health officials say there are two other cases of plague confirmed this year in the United States.

The Centers for Disease Control is downplaying the outbreak of rare insect and pest borne illnesses by saying that it’s not an unusually bad year for the diseases but rather that they’re “getting attention”.

The correct diagnosis and saving the girl’s life is credited to Dr. Jennifer Snow of Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children who suspected the disease based on where the girl had been, her symptoms and connecting those items to an online article of a teenager who had contracted the disease. It was the first case of bubonic plague Dr. Snow had seen directly in her career.

Dr. Snow said if they had kept the girl at home she could have died within 24 to 48 hours.

  1. Jim, I lived in Colorado Springs for 21 years, then moved to Lufkin, Tx in 2008. It is not uncommon to have the bubonic plaque found in parts of Colorado from time to time, usually in squirals as I recall. We had the hantavirus to deal with as well. However, what is happening today with 20,000 or more people possibly exposed, is highly unusual.
I really enjoy the show, especially the prophets this summer. I watch every day. Love and prayers to all.

  3. Jim and Lori,
We love watching your TV Program – we feel more connected to you and your ministry while we’re watching. We love you both and pray for God’s protection and provision for you to accomplish all He has called you to do. Hope to see you in Spring 2013 if the Lord tarries. We really enjoyed Bob Conner – he is amazing – he becomes a part of ones life just listening to him. Stay encoursged – we’re praying for strength for you Jim, we know life must get very heavy at times but HE IS ABLE!!!!
We so enjoyed your CD’s on “I Will Never Leave You or Forsake You” we got from Rick Joyner. He is faithful – He restored Job and He IS restoring you and all that evil people took from you and tried to destroy you. Just goes to prove greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world!!! They meant it for evil but God meant it for good for you and His glory.
    Love and prayers,
    Ruth and Bill Kadoich
