Germany has called on the other members of the European Union to consider giving up more of their country’s economic sovereignty to the collective Union.
German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble is proposing that the EU create an “EU Economic and Monetary Commissioner” who will have power to regulate the national budgets of individual member nations. The Commissioner would have the ability to veto a nation’s budget if it breaks established EU deficit rules.
German officials are calling for a convention next year to change European Union treaties to allow the position to be created. However, other nations have stated they would rather find a way to stabilize the current crisis situation before taking such a drastic step.
European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso stated the lack of movement toward a closer Union was allowing opposition groups to create debates that could put an end to the plan.
“It is clear that the euro area needs to evolve to a fiscal union and ultimately a political union,” Barroso told a political convention in Bucharest.
