A new respiratory illness that is similar to SARS has claimed a fourth and fifth victim. The World Health Organization reported that two people have died in Jordan from the disease. The confirmed cases from Jordan make the eighth and ninth confirmed cases worldwide and the first ones outside of Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

The infections have shown that the virus can be transmitted from human to human unlike previously believed by scientists. However, researchers say that the risk of transmission appears to be very low and that it “does not appear to transmit easily.”

The WHO also reported that Jordan had a series of severe pneumonias earlier this year but since the new coronavirus had not yet been identified, it would not have been shown in any tests.

The source for the new, fatal virus has not been determined, however, WHO researchers say they’ve found a similar virus that infects bats.
