The chilling message sent on twitter by the Queensland police commissioner revealed the severity of the flooding emergency facing the Australian state. The flooding in the state due to a cyclone bringing heavy rain has already killed three people.
Rescuers are struggling to reach hundreds trapped in the city of Bundaberg by floodwaters. Officials believe there is a very real chance of the town’s homes being washed away.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard had been visiting parts of the country devastated by uncontrolled wildfires but expressed sympathy for the family of the dead.
“We are a strong and smart nation and we’ll get through this, as we always do, by pulling together,” Gillard said.
The Bureau of Meteorology said they expect flood waters to crest Wednesday.
