Nine women who had been giving vaccinations for polio to the poor in Nigeria have been gunned down by terrorists.
A gunman on a motor tricycle rushed toward vaccinators in the northern city of Kano and killed the women while they were doing their job. A half hour later, gunmen hit a clinic just outside Kano as the vaccinators were preparing to start their day.
Islamists in the country have claimed the vaccination campaign is really an attempt to make Islamic residents infertile. Also, on Thursday, an Islamic cleric said that the causes of polio have been contaminated medicine and not the disease itself.
Nigeria is one of three countries in the world where polio is still endemic (along with Pakistan and Afghanistan.) This is the first time that polio workers have been attacked in Nigeria.
Analysts believe the attacks are the work of Boko Haram, a group whose name means “Western education is forbidden,” that has sworn to overthrow the government and install Sharia Law.
