Pouring rain and strong winds are pounding the western part of Australia as Tropical Cyclone Rusty makes landfall.
The storm is carrying gusts of 103 mph according to Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology.
The storm was expected to hit the major iron ore port of Hedland straight on but moved slighting to the south. Still, the port has been hit with gale force winds for 36 hours straight setting a record for wind speed in the region. Hedland is the world’s largest source of iron ore.
A resident of Pardoo, where the storm’s eye made landfall, said that heavy rains are causing concerns about the structure of buildings. Ian Badger told ABC that the ground is so soft from the continual rain that trees are starting to fall.
Low lying areas have been evacuated as the BoM is reporting a storm surge is likely to increase over the next day. A “red alert” has been issued for Pardoo and surrounding communities.
