Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, described as the spokesman for Osama Bin Laden, has been brought to New York to face charges regarding his role in the 9/11 attacks.
He pled not guilty in federal court on Friday morning to charges of conspiracy to kill United States nationals.
“Sulaiman Abu Ghaith held a key position in al-Qaeda, comparable to the consigliere in a mob family or propaganda minister in a totalitarian regime,” said FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge George Venizelos. “He used his position to threaten the United States and incite its enemies.”
A Turkish newspaper reported that Abu Ghaith was captured as he traveled to Kuwait after leaving Turkey. He had been detained by Turkish officials but was released because they could not prove he had committed a crime.
Abu Ghaith was one of the two men seen in the 9/12 video with Osama Bin Laden promising to do battle with “the Jews, the Christians and the Americans.” He reportedly was smuggled from Afghanistan to Iran in 2002.
Several elected officials are not happy with Abu Ghaith being brought to New York for trial.
“This man should be in Guantanamo Bay,” Senator Lindsey Graham told reporters.
