With the deadline for American and allied troops to leave Afghanistan a year away, reports from the Herat province show the Taliban is reinstituting a brutal form of Sharia Law.
In mid-March, two men were kidnapped by Taliban fighters and taken to a base where they were held for 27 days without explanation. On the morning of the 28th day, the men were taken to a room where their hand and foot were cut off with no explanation.
The Taliban is claiming the men had stolen items but they held no trial or even had a mullah come in to question the men.
The Taliban fighters had told the men they could be released if they agreed to plant bombs in the trucks of their employer who had been working with allied forces. Security experts in the region are speculating the men were taken for that purpose and the cutting off of hands and feet are warnings to other sin the region not to associate with groups opposed to the Taliban.
Local officials stated the action was very similar to the Taliban’s brand of justice when they controlled much of Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001.
