A Tunisian national who met with one of the men arrested for plotting to bomb a Canadian train has been arrested in New York on visa fraud charges.
Ahmed Abassi is believed to have helped radicalize Chiheb Esseghaier, one of two men charged in Canada with conspiracy to carry out an attack and kill people. The indictment against Abassi alleges that he then came from Canada to obtain a U.S. work visa to “facilitate an act of international terrorism.”
“As alleged, Ahmed Abassi had an evil purpose for seeking to remain in the United States – to commit acts of terror and develop a network of terrorists here, and to use this country as a base to support the efforts of terrorists internationally,” U.S. Attorney for Manhattan Preet Bharara said.
The justice department released a statement that the FBI obtained recordings of Abassi and Esseghaier discussing “terrorist acts against in the United States and other countries.”
Abassi also talked about helping groups like the Syrian Islamic extremist group al-Nusra Front.
Canadian media outlets are reporting that an imam in Toronto tipped off authorities after being concerned with statements from Esseghaier and his accused accomplice Raed Jaser.
