A Lebanese man who helped a Saudi Arabian woman convert to Christianity and escape the country has been sentenced to a punishment that could kill him.
The man is facing 300 lashes with a whip and if he survives the lashing he faces six year in prison.
A second man, a Saudi national, was also convicted as part of the effort to get the woman to Sweden and political asylum. He was sentenced to 200 lashes and two years in prison.
The woman, known as “Maryam”, appeared in a YouTube video that proclaimed her conversion to Christianity. She said that she dreamed of climbing to the sky and God telling her that Jesus is His Son. She stated she found “peace” in following Christ.
She also said the Sunni monarchy in her country had “instilled [in her] a hatred of Judaism and Christianity.”
The two men had worked with Maryam at an insurance company. The woman’s father filed complaints with the government leading to their arrests last July. The lawyer for Maryam’s family said that the father is overjoyed with the severe punishments given to the two men.
