The chief minister of Uttarakhand state in India says near 3,000 people are still missing after flash flooding and landsides devastated the region.
Vijay Bahuguna said the exact number of deaths will likely never be known but that over 800 people are confirmed dead in the state. Over 100,000 people have been evacuated from the area and reports say that hundreds of people are still trapped in remote regions of the state.
Officials say that swollen rivers have swept away entire villages. The early monsoon rains struck during a heavy tourist season meaning the disaster will have the dual impact on the economy of hampering tourism income while forcing expenditures to increase for relief efforts.
“We will compensate their families. They have to give an affidavit saying that their relatives have not returned home for more than 30 days,” Bahuguna told the Press Trust of India.
Military officials hope all people in need of rescue will be found before Tuesday.
