Hezbollah, backed by the Iranian government, has been playing a role in helping Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad fight against the rebels attempting to overthrow his government.
The blacklisting allows EU nations to crack down on fundraising for the group in their nations and prohibits any EU citizen from assisting Hezbollah.
White House spokesman Jay Carney said the move sends a clear message. He pointed out the group’s terror activities including an attack on a resort in Bulgaria last year and a plan to kill Israeli citizens in Cyprus.
“[The EU move is] an important first step in confirming what we have known for many years – that Hezbollah is a terrorist organization bent on sowing the seeds of instability and political violence not only in the Middle East, but around the world,” U.S. Rep. Eliot Engle told FoxNews.
