The Arab League has officially blamed the Syrian government for the chemical weapons attack that killed over 300 civilians one week ago.
The group held an emergency meeting on Tuesday and called for the United Nations Security Council to “overcome their differences” and take action against those who committed “this heinous crime”. The ministerial level of the League is meeting next week to discuss next steps against Syria.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry declared Monday that the Syrian government used weapons of mass destruction against civilians in the attack early last Wednesday morning.
The Syrian government has denied using the weapons.
Syria’s biggest international ally, Russia, is continuing to strongly advocate against any action against the Syrian government. Russia has agreed that chemical weapons were used in Wednesday’s attack but they steadfastly refuse to acknowledge the weapons were used by government forces.
Russia is expected to continue using its veto power in the U.N. Security Council to block any U.N. actions against Syria.
