Hurricane Isaac Strikes New Orleans Exactly Seven Years After Katrina

On the seventh anniversary of the catastrophic Hurricane Katrina, the less powerful Hurricane Isaac is hitting New Orleans. However, Isaac has already breached one levee in the city causing flooding of hundreds of homes.

The storm currently is maintaining sustained winds of 80 miles per hour.

Plaquemines Parish spokeswoman Caitlin Campbell said water is currently running over an 18-mile stretch of levee. The storm made landfall in their Parish and then went back out to sea before touching down further west to hit the city a second time. Continue reading

Spain’s Largest Region Seeks Another Bailout

Catalonia, a region of Spain that makes up one-fifth of the nation’s economy, is requesting a new bailout of 5 billion euros to cover debts.

The news comes as Spain’s economy shrank even further according to official data from the second quarter of the year. The nation’s economy fell about .4% after the economy fell .3% in the first quarter of the year. It’s the third straight quarter where the economy has shrunk and the overall annual contraction in the second quarter on an annual basis is 1.3%. Continue reading

Syria Funeral Attacked My Car Bomb; 12 Killed

A car bomb exploded in Damascus as a funeral procession passed killing 12 people and injuring 48. The bomb was reportedly placed inside a taxi that drove up to the procession. Reports say that several vehicles and buildings were damaged by the blast.

The attack came amid increased assaults between Syrian troops and Free Syrian Army rebel forces. Continue reading

Second Person Dies From Yosemite Hantavirus Outbreak

A little over a week after announcing that one of two vacationers had died from contracting hantavirus at Yosemite National Park, a second fatality has been confirmed by government officials.

Officials from Yosemite National Park officials have confirmed that over 1,700 visitors were put at risk for the potentially fatal disease after conditions in various rental cabins allowed infected rodents to breed and grow. Continue reading

Taliban Insurgents Murder Civilians For Attending Party

Two women and 15 men were found murdered along the side of a road in the Kajaki district of Afghanistan murdered by Taliban insurgents. All the victims were either beheaded or had their throats slashed. Most showed evidence of beatings and some had shotgun wounds.

Local officials confirmed the Taliban murdered the civilians.

“[They were] partying with music in an area under the control of the Taliban,” Helmand provincial governor’s spokesman told AFP news agency. The Taliban disapprove of men and women mixing in social environments. Continue reading

7.3 Earthquake Rattles El Salvador

A large earthquake struck off the coast of Puerto El Triunfo, El Salvador shaking hundreds of miles of coastline.

The quake centered just over 110 km from the coast minimizing the possibility of catastrophic damage. Several cities such as Usulutan, La Union and Chinandega felt significant shaking but no major damage. Continue reading

Syrian Troops Massacre 300 In Darayya

Free Syrian Army sources are reporting that the Syrian government massacred 300 people in Darayya on Sunday claiming they were cleansing the area of “terrorist remnants.”

However, video footage being released is showing the bodies of women and children killed by the troops laying in the streets.

The chairman of the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Independent Commission of Inquiry on Syria told the BBC this could be a war crime. Continue reading
