Thirteen people are confirmed dead after a tornado outbreak this weekend in Oklahoma including three veteran storm chasers.
Tim Samaras, his son Paul Samaras and Carl Young were featured on the TV show “Storm Chasers” and founded TWISTEX (Tactical Weather Instrumented Stample in Tornadoes Experiment.) A wildfire raging through the Angeles National Forest is spreading so fast that the U.S. Forest Service is having trouble tracking its size.

Storm chasers are known to be fairly brave and almost reckless in their pursuit of tornadoes. Tonight, a well-known storm chaser found himself in danger of losing his life.
Mike Bettes of the Weather Channel, a long-time veteran of on-the-ground severe weather reporting, was in his Tornado Hunt vehicle with two other Weather Channel vehicles trailing behind them. While filming one of the twisters striking Oklahoma City, his vehicle was picked up by a twister and thrown around 200 yards into a field.
The airbags deployed and Bettes & his two cameramen were wearing seatbelts so they escaped with only minor injuries. The SUV they were riding in was destroyed.
Bettes and his team were among 39 people confirmed injured (as of 11pm) as a result of the storm that killed a woman and her infant.
An outbreak of tornadoes around Oklahoma City has killed at least a mother and infant whose car was grabbed by the twister, thrown in the air and smashed into the ground.
The tornadoes struck during the evening commute along Interstate 40, a major east-west highway for workers who live in the city’s suburbs. The deaths happened along a portion of that highway. At least 14 other people were injured.
Police officials were in emergency mode as the storms approached telling motorists to leave their vehicles, find ditches to lay in and “pray”. One officer said the bumper-to-bumper traffic on the highways made the drivers “sitting ducks”. Continue reading →

An Oregon farmer has been found by the U.S. Department of Agriculture with a form of genetically modified wheat that was never approved for use in the United States.
Biotechnology company Monsanto, which recently received special dispensation from the federal government for other products, developed the particular strain of modified wheat but it was kept from being put into use after worldwide outcry against genetically modified wheat. Continue reading →
The National Weather Service has confirmed at least three tornadoes as part of a massive storm system that hit the Midwest on Thursday.
At least one injury was reported when a home was struck in west of Oden, Arkansas. Arkansas Emergency Management reported having trouble reaching the location because of the number of trees blocking on the road. Property damage and power lines are down across the region. Continue reading →
