Tornadic storms ripped through Mississippi Sunday evening injuring at least 16 people. No deaths have been reported but two of the injured are described to be in critical condition.
A tornado that struck Hattiesburg has caused major damage. Mayor Johnny DuPree said there was a blessing to the storm striking on Sunday night.
“If there is a good thing about this, it happened on a Sunday when most of these structures were vacant,” he told CNN.
The state emergency management agency said that many homes in Marion County were destroyed and that many businesses and public buildings sustained “significant damage.” 14,000 people were left without power in the wake of the storm.
Governor Phil Bryant issued a state of emergency for seven counties hit by the tornadoes.
A tornado struck the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi damaging buildings but no students were reported injured by school officials. The university along with area school districts were closed Monday due to storm damage.
