A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that “superbugs” are becoming a serious public health threat.
Antibiotic resistant gonorrhea, a diarrhea-causing superbug and a fast-growing killer bacteria are part of infections that hit 2 million U.S. citizens every year and kill at least 23,000.
“For organism after organism, we’re seeing this steady increase in resistance rates,” Dr Thomas Frieden, director of the CDC, told FoxNews. “We don’t have new drugs about to come out of the pipeline. If and when we get new drugs, unless we do a better job of protecting them, we’ll lose those, also.”
Only a few new antibiotics have been produced in recent years and only a few companies are working to replace those that are becoming less effective. The report says creation of new antibiotics is a must if doctors want to stay ahead of the mutating diseases.
The report stated the prevalence of these bacteria increasing. The killer carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) has spread from 1 state to 38 states in the last decade.
