UN chemical weapon inspectors are going to be returning to Syria on Wednesday according to statements from the Russian government.
Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told news outlets the investigators would focus on chemical weapons attacks at Khan al-Assal, Sheikh Maqsoud and Saraqueb. The locations were the initial destinations of the inspectors until the attack on a Damascus suburb August 21st that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of civilians.
Inspectors confirmed the nerve gas Sarin was used in that attack.
A UN War Crimes investigator told the BBC that they have evidence of 14 alleged cases of chemical weapon or chemical agent use in Syria since 2011.
The inspectors are not given the mandate to determine who fired the weapons, only if the weapons had been used at the sites.
Russia dismissed the UN inspectors’ reports about the Sarin attack near Damascus that pointed toward the Syrian government being responsible. Russia, who has been defending Syria from the beginning, said the report was “distorted” and used insufficient information.
