Thirteen people are facing trial in Algiers for trafficking children from Algeria to France.
The illegal trade in children was discovered when a woman died in 2009 during a botched abortion in an illegal clinic owned by the main suspect in the trafficking ring.
Abortion is illegal in Algeria. Dr. Khelifa Hanouti is facing charges that he impersonated an obstetrician and ran an abortion clinic in Ain Taya, Algeria. The arrest in 2009 was the second time that Hanouti was imprisoned for illegal abortions. He had been convicted in 2002 and served nine months in prison.
During the investigation into the clinic, a woman came forward to say Hanouti took her twins and sent them to France. At least 12 “adoption certificates” were discovered showing at least nine children sent overseas for money.
Investigators say they have proof that the network had been kidnapping and taking children overseas for money since the 1990s.
