Chinese government officials admitted the collection of at least 100 tons of poisoned fish from a river after what they term an industrial accident.
The recovery process is still ongoing and the amount of dead fish is likely to rise.
The Xinhua news agency reports a chemical plant released a massive amount of ammonia into the Fuhe river resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of fish. The plant, Hubei Shuanghuan Science and Technology Stock Company, has been ordered to close after the accident.
So far the number of dead fish has covered a 15 mile stretch of the river.
“The dead fish covered the entire river and looked like snowflakes,” local Communist Party secretary Wang Sanqing told the Associated Press.
Sanging added that local fisherman could lose over $11,000 a day in earnings as a result of the accident.
