Officials in Cuba have confirmed three deaths and over 50 people are infected with a breakout of cholera.
The outbreak of cholera in Manzanillo has been traced to a series of wells that have been closed by the government. Communist Party newspaper Granma reported the health ministry is dismissing reports of a lack of medicine to help the victims.
Around 1,000 people have received medical attention due to the outbreak. Officials blamed a recent bought of heavy rain and excessive heat for leading to the outbreak.
The health ministry reported the current outbreak as the first in Cuba since the 1959 revolution. They stated the last cholera epidemic in the nation was 1882.
Health officials reportedly are hiding the nature of the outbreak from residents. A BBC correspondent in Cuba spoke to a homeowner who said radio stations had been warning about an outbreak of diarrhea without any mention of cholera.
