Egypt’s defense minister issued a warning to protesters connected to Islamist groups and deposed president Mohammed Morsi to not “disrupt” the “difficult transition” of the Egyptian government.
The warning comes days after a protest by pro-Morsi activists ended in an attack on a military compound that left dozens dead.
Meanwhile, the transition took another step forward with a major political appointment.
Interim leader and top judge of the Constitutional Court Adly Mansour announced the appointment of Hazem el-Beblawi as prime minister. El-Beblawi was finance minister during the military rule during the government transition after the removal of Hosni Mubarak.
A temporary constitution has been put in place and elections are scheduled for early 2014. The Muslim Brotherhood has rejected that announcement and said that any election being held will be “illegitimate.”
The United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia both announced they would be providing billions in loans to the new Egyptian government to help with transition. Both governments have been critical of the Muslim Brotherhood. A Muslim Brotherhood related group was convicted of plotting an overthrow in the UAE last month.
