Despite reservations by a European Commission report regarding corruption and organized crime in Croatia, the EC has given permission to the nation to join the EU on July 1st.
Croatia would become the EU’s 28th member state and the first to join since Bulgaria and Romania in 2007. Croatia has been trying to negotiate membership in the EU for a decade.
EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele said the membership was just an bigger incentive for Croatia to crack down on corruption within the government.
“EU membership is an additional incentive to carry on with reforms. Croatia is expected to continue developing its track record in the field of the rule of law, notably in the fight against corruption,” he said.
The report did not state how Croatia’s entry would impact on the EU’s economic situation but the current bailout of Cyprus is adding to the strain on the Union.
