United Nations officials confirm that four peacekeepers are missing after a supply convoy was hit by flash flooding in the Darfur region of Sudan. Two other peacekeepers who were caught in the raging waters were found alive by a rescue team a few hours after the incident according to the BBC.
The World Health Organization reports that at least 50 people have been killed in the flooding across Sudan in August. They estimate at least 300,000 people have been impacted in some way by the floods.
The capital city of Khartoum and the surrounding region have been suffering through the worst flooding in 25 years.
This is the second time in a year that peacekeepers have been killed by flooding in Sudan. Last August three peacekeepers drowned when their armored vehicle became stranded in a swollen river.
U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon expressed concern about the quality of the equipment provided to peacekeepers in the Darfur region. He said that he fears the quality of the equipment has a negative impact on the mission’s operations according to AFP News.
