Fungal Meningitis Toll Tops 100

Rev 6:7,8  NCV  When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, "Come!" I looked, and there before me was a pale horse. Its rider was named death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill people by war, by starvation, by disease, and by the wild animals of the earth.

An outbreak of a rare form of meningitis has expanded to nine states and now has infected at least 105.

Eight people have died from tainted injections of methylprednisone obtained from the New England Compounding Center. As many as 13,000 patients could have been exposed to the contaminated drugs since May 21, much earlier than previously suspected by the Centers for Disease Control.

The drug is usually given to older patients who are suffering from lower back pain. The weaker immune systems in older patients could be contributing to the severity of the infections. The drug is injected directly into the patient’s spinal fluid.

The pharmacy has voluntarily closed and recalled all products. A single compounding pharmacy like the New England Compounding Center is not subject to FDA regulations but the FDA can be called in during situations like the current meningitis outbreak.

The pharmacy has sent products to clinics in California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Texas, and West Virginia.

Patients who have had injections of methylprednisone in those states are encouraged to contact their health care providers for testing if needed.
