Hacking Attack On Banks Nets 60 Million Euro

Editor’s Note:  In May 2011, the Wall Street Journal published an article titled “Pentagon: Cyber Attacks Can Count as Acts of War.”  The article began, “The Pentagon has concluded that computer sabotage coming from another country can constitute an act of war, a finding that for the first time opens the door for the U.S. to respond using traditional military force.”

“We are in love with money, and we worship at the altar of materialism.”

A massive cyber bank raid has stolen over 60 million euro from various bank accounts around the world according to software security firms McAfee and Guardian Analytics.

“The fraudsters’ objective in these attacks is to siphon large amounts from high balance accounts,” the report stated.

The thefts occurred from both business and private accounts. A virus was placed onto multiple bank servers that automatically transferred in groups of hundreds and 100,000 euro at a time.

The software is sophisticated enough to circumvent the security designed to alert security to abnormal activity.

“They have identified 60 different [bank] servers, many of them in Russia, and they have identified one alone that has been used to steal 60 million euro,” Sky News defense and security editor San Kiley said.
