Three people are dead and 60 injured after Islamic extremists attacked riot police in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The Islamists roared through the streets burning vehicles and either looting or burning businesses. The group, lead by Hefazat-e-Islam, is estimated to have been as large as half a million people. The group demanded that anyone who insulted Islam be immediately put to death.
The group chanted “Allahu Akbar” until they reached a rally point where they then changed their chant to “One point! One demand! Atheists must be hanged!”
Riot police were attacked when they tried to stop the mob from their assault on civilians.
Hefazat-e-Islam has also called for greater separation of women from men. The group is actively trying to stop a national development policy for women and women’s groups have come under threats of violence from the extremist group. It also wants to ban women from receiving any education in the country under their definition of Sharia law.
The Islamic group reportedly brought over 3,000 bus and car loads of people to the city to block roads and launch their riot.
Nearly 90% of the country is Muslim.
