One child was killed and many others wounded when a man connected to Somalian Islamic group Al-Shabab threw a grenade into a church’s children’s Sunday School area in Kenya’s capital of Nairobi.
The man was allegedly angry about African Union forces that included Kenyan army taking the Somalian port of Kismayo from the al-Shabab organization.
A mob later attacked Somalians living near the church leaving 13 injured.
Authorities said that three children were seriously injured in the grenade attack and many others slightly injured in the assault. The Red Cross had reported that six children were critically wounded.
“We were just worshipping God in church when suddenly we heard an explosion,” Irene Wambui told the BBC. “People started running for their lives. We came to realize that the explosion had injured some kids who were taken to the hospital and unfortunately one succumbed.”
Nairobi has suffered multiple grenade attacks by Islamists since Kenya contributed troops to the United Nations backed African Union assault on al-Shabab in October.
