Islamists across Bangladesh are rioting and protesting over the death sentence handed down to one of the leaders of the group Jamaat-e-Islami.
Abdul Kader Mullah was sentenced to be hanged for crimes against humanity committed during the nation’s 1971 war of independence. Jamaat-e-Islami called for a two day nationwide strike against the government which has resulted in violent protests.
One person has been confirmed dead by authorities after he was struck by rocks thrown by Islamists.
Mullah had originally been sentenced to life in prison for his crimes but appealed to the country’s supreme court saying the sentence was too severe. The government, responding to public outcry the life sentence should have been a death sentence, asked for the more stringent penalty.
Most of the country’s major commercial districts are basically deserted in the wake of the protests and attacks.
