As we reach the two-year anniversary of the massive 9.0 earthquake in Japan that killed thousands, a report is showing that the power of the quake could be detected almost 160 miles above the Earth.

The Goce satellite, designed to detect differences in the pull of gravity on the planet, picked up two separate low frequency acoustic waves during passes over the Pacific and Europe. No spacecraft has ever been able to pick up the waves believed to be emitted by a massive earthquake until now.

The sensitive instruments on the satellite allowed the scientists to construct a 3D model of the wave’s movements allowing them to show and track the earthquake.

The scientists are now turning their attention to the time period connected to the meteor that exploded over Russia injuring a thousand people and destroying windows & damaging buildings for hundreds of miles. They hope to be able to provide a tracking path for the meteor.
