A homicide bomber blew himself up in the northern Mali town of Gao, marking the first time the Islamic terrorists attempting to overthrow the government have used traditional terrorist-style tactics. The terrorist rushed soldiers riding a motorcycle before blowing himself up with an explosive belt. One soldier was moderately injured.
Gao is the most populated city in northern Mali. Islamists had control of the city and region until French forces drove them into the surrounding mountains.
Four Malian troops were killed Thursday by a land mine near Gao planted by the Islamists. Troops are now going through the town looking for mines, especially around schools and the town hall.
French forces reportedly took the mountain city of Tessalit from the Islamists. The town has an airport making it a key city in the mountainous region.
Meanwhile, the United Nations said they will be sending money and specialists to help Mali rebuild historic relics and locations destroyed by the Islamists.
