Malware To Knock Thousands Off Internet Monday

Editor’s Note:  In May 2011, the Wall Street Journal published an article titled “Pentagon: Cyber Attacks Can Count as Acts of War.”  The article began, “The Pentagon has concluded that computer sabotage coming from another country can constitute an act of war, a finding that for the first time opens the door for the U.S. to respond using traditional military force.”

Tens of thousands of computers in America will lose their internet connection ability on Monday when the FBI turns off special web servers aimed at keeping the infected computers from losing access.

The FBI worked with international groups to break an organization of international hackers who secretly infected millions of computers and used them as servers to send information and steal information from the host computers. The information was used in identify theft scams and other cyber crimes.

When the FBI shut down the group, the infected computers would have lost immediate internet access because the virus steered all computers to “look-a-like” websites on the host servers. Due to the number of infected computers running into the millions worldwide, the FBI contacted a private company to set up servers to allow the computers to function while they were disinfected.

Over 65,000 American computers are still believed to be infected with the servers scheduled to shut off Monday.

If you have not checked your computer for infection, visit http://www.dns-ok.us and if you see a green icon your computer is clean. If it’s red, you will find options on how to disinfect your system.
