After rampant speculation Monday night in the wake of the deadly Moore, Oklahoma tornado, the National Weather Service has confirmed the twister was an EF-5, the highest on the Enhanced Fujita Scale.
“An EF-5 is as bad as it gets,” said Joe D’Aleo, co-chief forecaster for WeatherBell Analytics. “It’s equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane. It means winds were more than 200 miles per hour, and it means you have to be underground, because there will be nothing left above ground.”
The NWS said that in just over the last 60 years there have been only 59 EF-5 tornadoes including the storm that struck Joplin, Missouri becoming the most deadly tornado in U.S. history.
