A Muslim man on trial for the murder of his 17-year-old daughter in 2003 has had his wife come forward to claim he’s guilty of the crime.

Farzana Ahmed, also on trial for the killing of Shafilea Ahmed, told prosecutors that her husband Ifitkar attacked their daughter and that she had tried to stop him. After her husband punched and pushed her away, she hid in a bedroom with other children until she heard a car leaving 20 minutes later.

Ifitkar reportedly was upset at the “western” lifestyle of his daughter.

Alesha Ahmed, Shafilea’s younger sister, testified she had seen her parents stuff a plastic bag in her sister’s mouth and watched her suffocate.

Alesha Ahmed came forward in 2010 to tell police of observing the killing.

Prosecutor Nazir Afzai said convicting perpetrators of so-called “honor killings” can be difficult.

“There is a wall of silence around this,” he said. “People are not prepared to talk.”
