A mysterious respiratory illness in southeast Alabama has killed two of the seven people infected.
All of the victims are adults. They have symptoms of fever, cough and shortness of breath. So far, authorities have not been able to confirm the cause of the illnesses. Special respiratory precautions are being taken by medical personnel.
State health officials say one blood sample has tested positive for H1N1 Influenza A but none of the other samples have tested positive for that strain of the virus. The officials add that while none of the other samples show H1N1, there is no evidence to suggest that the outbreak is related to the H7N9 flu currently impacting China or the newly renamed Middle East Respiratory Syndrome.
Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) was formerly known as the Novel Coronavirus and discovered in Saudi Arabia in 2012. It has killed 20 of 41 confirmed victims.
Samples from all seven patients have been sent to the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta for further testing.
“At this point it’s too early to tell [the cause],” Dr. Mary McIntyre of the Alabama Department of Public Health told NBC. “That’s why we called it a respiratory illness of unknown origin.”

My pastor Randy Sims, (who lived in Mount Vernon, Il) died of similair symptoms. He went to Columbia on a mission trip and started coughing a couple of days after he got back. Within 8 days, he was on a respirator and passed a way a month later. His kidneys failed, they had him on a profusion machine to oxygenate and filter his blood. They said his lungs were the texture of concrete. No anti-biotics helped him either and the CDC never figured out what he had. It was a tragic loss for his wife and us, his friends. This is more widespread than people know. Moutn Vernon, Il is a small town in southern Illinois.
