A man convicted of human trafficking in Nepal has been sentenced to 170 years in jail for forcing teenage girls to work as prostitutes in India.

Bajir Singh Tamang, 37, told girls in rural areas that he could provide them with jobs in the Middle East and then sold them to brothels.

His own daughter was one of the girls he sold into sexual slavery.

“He was charged for illegally recruiting the girls,” prosecutor Krishna Jung Shah said. He was also charged for selling the girls and for running a prostitution ring. Six of the girls under 16 who were rescued by human rights groups in 2007 and 2009 pressed charges against Tamang.

The sentence is the longest sentence ever given to someone in Nepal.
