Health officials in China confirm that a woman in southern Guangdong province has been confirmed to have contracted the H7N9 bird flu.
The 51-year-old poultry worker is in critical condition after being admitted to a hospital with high fever.
“She was a poultry slaughtering worker at a local marketplace,” according to a statement from the local health bureau.
Local health officials had 96 people who had close contact with the woman under quarantine but released 54 on Saturday. Officials reiterated that the transmission of the virus human-to-human is very rare.
H7N9 infections have fallen significantly over the last few weeks.
