The coronavirus that has killed 6 of 12 confirmed patients has been found to be much more infectious to humans than previously announced by doctors according to a new study by Swiss researchers.
The virus, now called Novel Coronavirus or NCoV, is from the same family of virus as SARS. The virus was unknown in humans until September 2012 so research had not begun in earnest until late 2012.
The report shows that NCoV grows “very efficiently” in humans and is “well-equipped” for infecting humans. The virus can penetrate the lining of the lungs as efficiently as the common cold.
Doctors had previously said the virus was hard to spread between humans. The new study seems to conflict that position.
The study says that the virus could be fought with a course of interferons which boost the immune system similar to treatments for viruses like Hepatitis C.
“We don’t know whether the cases (so far) are the tip of the iceberg, or whether many more people are infected without showing severe symptoms,” lead researcher Volker Thiel wrote. “We don’t have enough cases to have a full picture of the variety of symptoms.”
“So far it looks like the virus is well contained, so in that sense I don’t see any reason for increased fear,” he added.
