An illness similar to the SARS virus that killed hundreds in 2003 has been discovered in a man being treated in London.
The 49-year-old man was rushed from Qatar to London after being the second person confirmed with the coronavirus. The first case was a Saudi Arabian who died from the disease.
While the World Health Organization has not issued any travel restrictions to the middle east where both cases originated officials cannot yet determine what threat this new virus poses to the population. Officials have not even been able to determine if the virus is spread human-to-human like SARS.
Professor John Watson, head of the UK’s Health Protection Agency’s respiratory diseases department, stated that there is no specific evidence of the virus transferring person to person.
“SARS was very quick off the mark infecting hospital staff,” Watson said to the BBC. “This new virus does not to me appear to be in the same ‘big bang group.”
A small outbreak of serious respiratory illnesses has broken out in the Middle East the last three months resulting in one fatality.
