The USDA has issued a public health alert for raw chicken packed at three California based Foster Farms locations after 278 people have been sickened with salmonella.
Salmonella has been linked to retail stores in California, Oregon and Washingston state according to the USDA statement. Illness connected to the chicken has been found in 18 states with most in California.
While the outbreak apparently began in March the USGA was first notified of illness in July according to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.
The USDA has not linked the outbreak to a specific product. However, the USDA mark on packages would say P6137, P6137A and P7632. Foster Farms officials said that no recall was in effect because the infections were from eating undercooked or improperly handled chicken.
Chicken needs to be cooked to 165 degrees to kill Salmonella bacteria.
