Peru’s government has ordered a state of emergency after a freak cold spell has caused the deaths of two people and tens of thousands of animals.
In addition to the two deaths, officials say at least 33,000 people have had to receive some kind of assistance because of the weather.
The state of emergency would be in place at least 20 days.
Local officials say the snowfall has been the heaviest to hit Peru in decades.
One of the deaths was a man whose hut collapsed because of the weight of the snow. Rescue workers say three women were saved from that region after the collapse suffering from frostbite and snow blindness.
The cold front has also hit Bolivia and Paraguay where a total of five people have died in the two nations.
