Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced the country’s sales tax would rise from 18% to 21% and that local governments would have their budgets significantly cut in an attempt to appease Eurozone regulators after the country requested a financial bailout.
Rajoy’s plans state it should save the country $80 billion.
The announcement came as miners were protesting in the capital of Madrid. The miners were demanding the cuts to subsidies for mining companies be restored. Thousands of citizens joined with the miners in their protests. They threw bottles, stones and fireworks at police who responded with rubber bullets.
Rajoy had no choice but to admit that his actions run against what he promised during the campaign that brought his party to power.
“I said I would lower taxes and I am actually raising them,” Rajoy said. “Circumstances change and I have to adapt to them.”
Spain’s unemployment rate is continuing to exceed 24%.
