Strongest Earthquake In 50 Years Shakes Iran; Pakistan; Afghanistan

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake centered in Iran reached three countries resulting in fatalities in at least two.

The quake, centered near the Iranian cities of Khash (population 180,000) and Saravan (population 250,000), struck approximately 3:14pm local time Tuesday. The earthquake was measured at a depth of almost 60 miles. The Iranian Fars news agency said on the surface the quake had the impact of a 4.0 surface quake.

Initially Iranian state TV reported 40 deaths but an Iranian official quoted by Reuters said that hundreds of deaths are anticipated when rescue personnel reach all locations. All communications to the region is down making casualty reports hard to obtain. Iran’s Red Crescent said they are sending 20 search-and-rescue teams to the region along with 3 helicopters to find victims trapped in rubble.

At least 34 people have been confirmed killed in Pakistan with 80 injured.

In Qatar across the ocean from Iran, researchers in Qatar said they felt the ground shaking for 25 seconds during the initial quake.
