Red-hot ash and volcanic rock rained down from Mount Sinabung in Sumatra Sunday forcing thousands to flee the mountain’s wrath.
The mountain erupted shortly before dawn Sunday morning.
The head of the North Sumatra disaster agency told AFP that more than 3,000 people have been evacuated from within two miles of the volcano. Halls used for cultural ceremonies have been turned into shelters for the displaced residents.
This is the second major eruption for Mount Sinabung since waking from a 100-year slumber in August & September 2010. Over 12,000 people were forced to flee from that eruption.
Indonesia is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire where volcanic eruptions are common. Five people were killed last month during an eruption on a small island in East Nusa Tenggara province.
