The strongest storm on Earth in 2013 is bearing down on Taiwan and Hong Kong.
Typhoon Usagi was moving through the Pacific Ocean with 75 m.p.h. sustained winds until yesterday when winds shot through 160 m.p.h. A typhoon becomes a “Super Typhoon” when winds past 150 m.p.h.
The storm is the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane.
The storm is moving west with the eye expected to pass just below the southern tip of Taiwan. However, forecasters say the winds radiating from the storm’s eye could cause massive damage to the island including up to 30 inches of rain in some areas.
The storm is then tracking to hit Hong Kong head on. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center predicts the storm’s sustained winds will lower to 100 m.p.h. by the time it arrives at Hong Kong.
