The Taliban assassinated a young American diplomat and five others this weekend.
Anne Smedinghoff, 25, was killed along with three soldiers, two civilians and an Afghan doctor. The group was traveling to deliver books to a school in the southern part of the country.
“She tragically gave her young life working to give young Afghans the opportunity to have a better future,” Secretary of State john Kerry said. “”We also honour the US troops and Department of Defence civilian who lost their lives, and the Afghan civilians who were killed today as they worked to improve the nation they love.”
Officials say the terrorists used a homicide car bomb attack to strike the convoy. The governor of Kabul had been traveling to the same event in a nearby convoy.
“We were waiting for one of them,” Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi told the Associated Press. “It was our good luck that both appeared at the same time.”
The Taliban killed another American in a separate attack in eastern Afghanistan.
