Islamic terrorists have attacked the offices of the Red Cross in eastern Afghanistan.
A local security guard was killed in the attack on the Jalalabad office of the international aid organization. A grenade was tossed into the compound and attackers then forced their way inside to launch a gun battle with security forces.
The head of the office was injured in the assault and seven foreign Red Cross workers were rescued and are at a safe location.
The gun battle lasted almost two hours according to General Sharifullah Amin, police chief for the Nangarhar province.
The attack on the Red Cross was considered unusual in that the organization has good relations with all sides in the conflict. They have provided artificial limbs to war wounded and visit jailed insurgents.
The Taliban announced a “spring offensive” in April promising to attack foreign military bases and diplomatic areas. This is the first time the group is known to have targeted the Red Cross.
